30 Day Fast

A fast can be many things. Normally it is a plan to deny yourself some kind of food or something that is habitual. You want the lack of it to be noticed regularly by your body and your mind. And you want to experience a sort of hunger for it. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. A fast, by design, will turn your thoughts toward God when the moment comes that you say No. These posts will help you focus on how He will spiritually provide what you need, in the moment and beyond.

Fasting in the Bible

We will review the whole Bible, exploring what happened when fasting was a special focus for the people of Israel, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Keeping in mind the way that Jesus taught us to fast, we will find new ways for us to enact a spiritual habit of fasting in our modern lives.

Planting Seeds

This is the kind of fasting God wants. One that grows a hunger for Him and His priorities. In Isaiah 58 He says: Don’t fast for show. Help free the oppressed. Feed the hungry and shelter the homeless, the stranger, and the refugee. Clothe the needy. Pay attention to your relatives. Explore how to plant seeds that seed His kingdom. See His harvest!

Habits of Jesus

Explore the habits of Jesus that kept Him hungering for His Father and continuing His mission. Even though He was separated from Him on earth and about to be separated in a different way by His death on the cross, He was faithful and believed in His resurrection.

Five Marks of a Disciple

Fasting builds intimacy with God, and you want to grow inwardly, upwardly, and also outwardly. Explore five marks of a transformed disciple of Jesus and determine five actions that will allow God to change you. An action that applies to each mark is focus, and fasting and prayer is God’s way for us to find the kind of focus that builds intimacy within and actions without. Be with Him. Be like Him. Do what He wants.

Hunger for the Harvest

We will explore together how fasting increases your hunger for God, creating a position of humility that thirsts for holiness. Helping others and planting seeds will become a natural and a supernatural response. Jesus is the Lord of the Harvest, He will use you in the lives of others to further His kingdom.

Honor the Hungry

God says: Help free the oppressed. Feed the hungry and shelter the homeless, the stranger and the refugee. Clothe the needy (Isaiah 58: 6 – 7). It is okay to start small! Ask God for a specific way to honor the hungry (or the oppressed, homeless, unclothed) during this season in which we honor the Christ-child. Read a daily post during this time to encourage you and give you ideas. Follow through with your project starting December 4 and read about how and why God can use your generosity to plant eternal seeds in a stranger’s heart.

New Habits

New habits are about identifying the action you need to take and how you will mold it into your life. But just as important, identifying an overwhelmingly strong understanding of Why will this habit make a difference? will fuel the motivation you need to keep following through. Most new habits are not spiritually neutral, they may point out a character change and a new spiritual connection will make all the difference.

A Season of Harvest

Fasting from physical food promotes hungering for more of God. And God hungers for a soul harvest, which is why He sent Jesus as a baby, just like food starts from seeds. He was nurtured by His parents and by His Father in heaven. “He kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52) He came to spiritually harvest all the seed-planting that we do, as He is the Lord of the Harvest (Luke 10:2). And He responds with magnificent joy to each lost one who is saved (Matthew 18:13). Explore what it means to plant seeds for His harvest.
