FASTING IN THE BIBLE, APRIL 8 – MAY 29

Posts every Wednesday and Friday to learn about fasting in the Bible. We will review the whole Bible, exploring what happened when fasting was a special focus for the people of Israel, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Keeping in mind the way that Jesus taught us to fast, we will find new ways for us to enact a spiritual habit of fasting in our modern lives.

COMING NEXT: HUNGER FOR THE HARVEST, JUNE 2 AUGUST 21

Posts every Wednesday and Friday to learn about the connection between fasting and His harvest. We will explore together how fasting increases your hunger for God, creating a position of humility that thirsts for holy intimacy and holy maturity. Fasting in the Bible Day 16: The New Fast

Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then…

Fasting in the Bible Day 15: It’s a Secret

Jesus, Sermon on the Mount: Beware of practicing good deeds before men to be admired by them, for you will lose your reward from your Father who is in heaven. When you give to those who are in need, do not blow your own trumpet! This is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets.…

Fasting in the Bible Day 12: Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He…

Habits of Jesus Day 21: Go

God said to Isaiah, Who will go? And Isaiah said, “I’ll go!” In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, sitting on a throne, and the train of His robe was filling the temple. Above Him were worshiping angels, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their…

Habits of Jesus Day 18: Foundational Truth

Jesus said, “These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart builder who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured…

  • Habits of Jesus Day 14: Justice

Habits of Jesus Day 14: Justice

Justice matters to Jesus! Therefore, justice matters to us. Justice, for the Three-In-One God we worship, was not described here by Jesus as a priestly program for the poor, a special tithe to build a stronger prison or a rabbinical lecture to be attended by the elite elected leaders of the moment. “For I was…

  • Habits of Jesus Day 1: The Lord’s Prayer

Habits of Jesus Day 1: The Lord’s Prayer

The disciples noticed that Jesus prayed when He was alone. They asked Him how they could make His habit their own. The Lord’s Prayer. Jesus said, pray this way: “Our Father, who is in heaven, holy be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us…

  • Fast Day 27: Satisfied

    Fast Day 27: Satisfied

Jesus taught what is known as the Beatitudes or the Blessings to start off His Sermon on the Mount. I love that He began this teaching by defining what it means to follow Him in such a positive way, not in a condemning way! The follower He describes is someone who is humble spiritually, who…

  • Fast Day 24: Compassion

    Fast Day 24: Compassion

When Jesus felt compassion for the crowds, He knew the specific distress, oppression and burdens that each person was experiencing. He wanted to free them from all these things! Seeing the crowds, Jesus felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9: 36 The Lord of the…

  • Fast Day 19: Seeking

    Fast Day 19: Seeking

Jesus shares a beautiful illustration of how God cares for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field in His creative world design! This is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life – whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than…
