HABITS OF JESUS, MARCH 12 – APRIL 4

Daily posts to learn more about how Jesus modeled His life for us. For 21 days leading up to Easter, explore the habits of Jesus that kept Him hungering for His Father and continuing His mission. Even though He was separated from Him on earth and about to be separated in a different way by His death on the cross, He was faithful and believed in His resurrection.

Coming Next: FASTING IN THE BIBLE, APRIL 8 – MAY 29

Posts every Wednesday and Friday to learn about fasting in the Bible. We will review the whole Bible, exploring what happened when fasting was a special focus for the people of Israel, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Keeping in mind the way that Jesus taught us to fast, we will find new ways for us to enact a spiritual habit of fasting in our modern lives.

New Habits 3: Strong Bones

Because of your 30 Day Fast and extra attention to your relationship with the Lord, you may be experiencing a comforting renewal, a needed revival, or a total resurrection in your spiritual life! Before I moved to Florida, I had also come to the end of my infertility journey with only multiple miscarriages as the result. I had been badly hurt by the church I was working at as an assistant pastor. My wayward husband divorced me. I was badly in need of comfort and renewal and a resurrection of the woman I was before. God pointed me to these verses from Ezekiel during an old-fashioned church revival, and I found a new, reviving word from Him.

Ezekiel: The Spirit of the LORD set me down in a valley full of bones. I walked through them, there were a lot, and they were very dry. God asked, “Can these bones live?” I said, “Only You know.” So God asked me to speak over the bones and say, “You dry bones, hear the Word of the LORD: God is going to make tendons, flesh and skin cover you and breath enter you so that you will come to life and know that He is LORD.” So I spoke these words and the rattling bones came together. Tendons, flesh and skin covered them. Breath entered them and they came to life. They stood on their feet, a great army. From Ezekiel 37: 1-10

He said to me, “Yes, these bones can live!”

These dead, dry bones became strong bones and came to life by the word of the LORD. I always picture the bones connecting (“the hip bone connected to the leg bone”), along with the Sunday School song, and see skeletons running around the desert. But this time I read the passage, I saw it in a new way … the bones actually became fully alive men with muscles and flesh! Not Halloween skeletons, but Easter resurrections!

Prior to this vision, there are other references in Ezekiel about what the resurrected Israelite would be like: I will give you a new heart and I will put a new spirit within you (Ezekiel 11: 19, 36: 26). Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones was a visual illustration of a resurrected Israel, under the sole kingship of a king who was like David. Jesus, physically from the line of David, was the only King who reigned after Ezekiel’s time, although spiritually. This was to be a different Israel:

The Lord GOD said, “I am going to cause My people to come out of their graves. Then you will know that I am the LORD. And I will put My Spirit within you, you will come to life and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken and done it.” From Ezekiel 37: 12-14

Although the dry bones vision is not referred to in the New Testament, the important part about the indwelling Spirit of God is repeated. This Spirit has made us into a new creation (2 Cor 5:17).

God promises to strengthen our bones (Isaiah 58:11). Strong bones will keep us pursuing new habits. We need to be strong for our families. We want to be strong for our community. We must be strong to do His good things. But if we are strengthened without the Word of the Lord or the breath of the Spirit of God, we are just a sack of rattling, dry bones.

Find a solitary, deserted place.

Ask Him to identify the dry bones of false commitments, fake enthusiasms, and faltering plans that might be lying around in your life.

Listen to Him speak to you about the bones that need to be stronger to support a renewed life with Him.

Identify clearly the new habits that will ensure your actions are God-inspired.

Write about this in your journal.

Ask that the breath of His Spirit fill and strengthen you. He will.

Holy God, You have placed me in the desert with some dry bones. Show me how to really live in Your Spirit. I want to be fully alive and strong for new habits. Thank You for making me a new creation. I am Yours alone. Amen.
