They have carved out for themselves broken cisterns that do not hold water. Jeremiah 2: 13
Broken cisterns represent those false spiritual reservoirs we try to use to fill up our life, even for those in a spiritual fast. We might say:
“I went to church today,” but actually I did not listen or participate.
“I read the Bible today,” but I read for information, not to seek God.
“I volunteered at the homeless shelter,” but I could not stop shuddering at the bad choices people make, instead of letting His Spirit flow through me to hug a shoulder.
“I fasted today,” but weighed myself constantly instead of connecting with God.
I have been struggling with fasting and not thinking about the weight I might lose. I want to experience fasting’s ability to give clarity to my focus on the Lord, instead. I want to know the comfort of unhindered prayer. I want to connect with Jesus in a way that is out of the ordinary. From many fasts in the past, I know its ability to position me to receive these things from God. Yet, especially in a 30 day fast, on some days it is a struggle that the devil and my sinful self wrestle with.
He is the spring of living water. Jeremiah 2:13
Recognizing His ability to water me with His life helps to deflect this struggle. His water is drenching and refreshing, and all I need is to seek Him with vigor and purity in my heart.
Lord of the Spring, Your living water is all I need. Help me to receive it and seek You for all I need. Amen.
