Jesus cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. You will have streams of living water flow from deep within. This He spoke about the Spirit.” John 7: 37-38
True generosity on a spiritual level cannot come from our own meager stores, but from the overwhelming overflow of the Spirit resourcing God’s infinite love.
When I am fasting, it is easy to become focused on scarcity. But fasting is a means of intentionally accessing His generosity for everything He calls us to do. An empty stomach (or an empty space of not doing something) prods us to hunger for His filling and He flows through us spiritually and practically. Isaiah 58 emphasizes not neglecting service while we are fasting (Is 58: 6-7). God provides His generosity and grace for others.
As I write this I realize that I have been trying to schedule my sun up to sun down fasting days each week on a down day, but now He is speaking to me that a day busy with His work gives Him and I an opportunity to practice His overflow!
Holy Spirit, fill me and flow from me to those You place in my path. Amen.
