HABITS OF JESUS, MARCH 12 – APRIL 4

Daily posts to learn more about how Jesus modeled His life for us. For 21 days leading up to Easter, explore the habits of Jesus that kept Him hungering for His Father and continuing His mission. Even though He was separated from Him on earth and about to be separated in a different way by His death on the cross, He was faithful and believed in His resurrection.

Coming Next: FASTING IN THE BIBLE, APRIL 8 – MAY 29

Posts every Wednesday and Friday to learn about fasting in the Bible. We will review the whole Bible, exploring what happened when fasting was a special focus for the people of Israel, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Keeping in mind the way that Jesus taught us to fast, we will find new ways for us to enact a spiritual habit of fasting in our modern lives.

Honor the Hungry Day 6: Never Fail

This is what the LORD says: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who relies on human strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD. That person will be like a stunted shrub in the wastelands. They will not see prosperity when it comes. They will live in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water with roots that reach deep into the stream. It does not fear when heat comes. Its leaves are always green. It  will not be anxious in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17: 5-8

To never fail to bear fruit. What a promise! What a hope! As I prepared this devotional, I was thinking, Okay, what’s the catch? How much fasting do I need to do? How perfect do I need to be to receive this promise? How drastically might my life need to change to really experience this?

This is our human view of never fail. It’s understandable. When we look around the world, our world of faulty people, it can be so hard to see His world of never fail! We are jaded. We are tired. We may be without hope. And certainly we know people just like us.

Music is not always my particular go-to when I need to feel the truth of God’s never fail in my heart and in my soul, but when I seek it out, it always brings tears and joy. Some of the lyrics of this song by Hillsong Young & Free, called Never Fail, touched me today! Listen on YouTube and let it touch you: This is a prayer for the desert, when the road seems long. Waiting for the promise that is yet to come. And even in the wilderness, You will lead me home. Jesus, You are with me. You’re my only hope. And You never will fail me. Never, You never fail me. If You’re not in it, I don’t want it. If You said it, I believe it. Where You call me I will follow. ‘Cause You’ve never failed me yet.

We can be the tree with deeply watered roots and always-green leaves. No fear and no anxiety. We can be the tree that never fails to bear fruit. Because He is our God and He never fails us.

All great songs are based on Scripture. Here are some never fail promises that God offers up to store in our heart. Look up in each version noted:

My covenant with you will never fail (Psalms 89: 28 NIV).

His compassions never fail (Lamentations 3:22 NIV).

My righteousness will never fail you (Isaiah 51: 6 NIV).

Your treasure in heaven will never fail (Luke 12:33 NIV).

For the word of God will never fail (Luke 1:37 NIV).

Keep on doing what is right, He will never fail you (1 Peter 4:19 NLT).

God will never fail you or abandon you (Hebrews 13:5 NLT).

You will be a spring of water whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11 NIV).

He who trusts in the Lord will never fail to bear fruit (Jer 17:8 NIV).

Take a closer look at the last two verses. This is such good news! Not only does God never fail us, but we can be a vessel for His spring waters that never fail and we will never fail to bear His fruit. Trust Him. He will do it!

Whatever we long to see happen when we step out and honor the hungry, our actions will never fail to bring forth fruit!

Dearest Lord, You will never fail me because You are eternally righteous. I want to have an open heart to be filled by You and to bear Your fruit. Amen.
