Hunger for the Harvest Day 9: Humility and Love

Be humble, like Christ.

Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this humility in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus … who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on the cross. Philippians 2: 1-5, 8 

This is a tall order which can only be accomplished through humility.

Selfishness can be like a yoke around your neck separating you from those that are free and wounding your spirit. Removing the yoke from your own neck or helping someone else remove their yoke promotes equality and unity. If you know and love God, this binding can be broken because God’s binding heals (Psalm 147:3).

This healing is important for the body of Christ to be whole. Everyone in your spiritual community could be seen, heard, and valued. That means the tattooed biker, the prissy lady with the Mercedes, the construction worker with the dirty hands, the mom with four unruly kids, the practically deaf old man, the former cheerleader, the always wet surfer dude, the suited-up and buttoned-up business owner … and you! 

Your close community’s purposes can be clear and easily communicated. You could feel comfortable together because you see people’s hearts and look in their eyes and acknowledge that you are the same. You listen and you become vulnerable with your own heart.  

It might be like there was a humility contest that everyone was entered into but no one ever sent in their list of humble acts because they wanted someone else to win … 

What could that kind of equality and love look like in your community?

When you are in your close group or community, what causes your heart to pitter patter with anxiety?

Is it that she didn’t acknowledge you? Humble yourself, step out and acknowledge her.

Is it that you had to sit at the front and not with your friends? Meet the front row folks and share your reflections with them.

Is it that no one ever invites you to lunch or golf? Humble yourself and invite someone to go. 

Unity is built through humble love and action. Love is addicting and love is contagious! Keep it up! 

Dearest Jesus, You humbled Yourself and went to the cross for me. You demonstrated the love the Father had for You by Your love for the disciples, the crowds, and the sinners. You always put everyone else first. I love You because You first loved me. Help me unite with others with that love. Amen.
