Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Cor 1: 3-4)
Instead of giving to a ministry that pops up in your day, you might consider your passions and ask God to help you find a way to use that to honor the hungry (or the oppressed, homeless, unclothed, or needy relative).
Here is an alphabetized list of passions from http://www.freeshapetest.com. Often, people feel passionate about helping others with an issue that they have gone through and God has helped them overcome and comforted them. I have added some Bible verses to help you see God’s view of these issues. Unfortunately, someone who has gone through any one of these issues, through no fault of their own in many cases, may end up spiralling into poverty and hunger:
- Abortion/sanctity of life (Psalm 139:13)
- Abuse/violence (Psalm 11:5)
- Alcoholism (1 Cor 6:12)
- At-risk children (Col 3:21)
- Compulsive behavior (2 Tim 1:7)
- Disabilities (Lev 19:14)
- Drug abuse/recovery (Rom 5: 3-5)
- Educational (Prof 9:9)
- Financial stewardship (1 Peter 5:2)
- Health/fitness (1 Cor 6:19-20)
- Homelessness (Isaiah 58:7)
- Marriage/family issues (Song of Solomon 8:6-7)
- Parenting (Deut 6:6-7)
- Policy/politics (Matt 22:21)
- Poverty/hunger (Prov 19:17)
- Spiritual laziness (Prov 13:4)
- Other (if your passion is not listed!): _____________________
How has God comforted you?
What crisis, trouble or issue has God helped you rise from?
What might you say to someone who is dealing with the same thing?
God of All Mercies, You have comforted me and helped me to survive and thrive. Show me how I might comfort and help someone else. I know I am not perfect in this area, but I ask for Your humility to be transparent and say the things I wish had been said to me, at the time. Your love is sustaining and powerful for all. Amen.
