HABITS OF JESUS, MARCH 12 – APRIL 4

Daily posts to learn more about how Jesus modeled His life for us. For 21 days leading up to Easter, explore the habits of Jesus that kept Him hungering for His Father and continuing His mission. Even though He was separated from Him on earth and about to be separated in a different way by His death on the cross, He was faithful and believed in His resurrection.

Coming Next: FASTING IN THE BIBLE, APRIL 8 – MAY 29

Posts every Wednesday and Friday to learn about fasting in the Bible. We will review the whole Bible, exploring what happened when fasting was a special focus for the people of Israel, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Keeping in mind the way that Jesus taught us to fast, we will find new ways for us to enact a spiritual habit of fasting in our modern lives.

A Season of Seeds Day 19: Light Came for Us, II

Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world. The one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light that leads to life.” John 8: 12

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were created. Without Him nothing was created. In Him was life and that life was the Light for all people to live by. The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out. John, who was not the Light, came as a witness to tell about the Light, so that all might believe through the Light. This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. John 1: 1-9

Light is a fundamental need for us. It was the first thing God created (Genesis 1:3). The Light came for us.

I was able to adjust to the nightly white-light skies of Alaska on a month’s summer vacation and used blackout curtains to sleep according to the clock. I haven’t experienced the long nights of black that blot out the day in countries close to the North Pole, but even the short days of winter in Florida sometimes bring on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) for me. Light is important!

We have secondary lights to aid us. There is the sun, the moon, sometimes the stars, the light of a fire and all kinds of lamps and electronically produced light in our modern world. There is even a light that works by using the kinetic energy you produce when you swing it around!

So, when Jesus says that He is the Light of the world, we sit up and listen. He is saying that He is the exclusive source of the Light that creates true spiritual Life.

What does that Light do in you?

Illuminates the Word (Psalms 119: 105).
Glorifies the Father's works (Matthew 5: 16).
Produces goodness, righteousness and truth (Ephesians 5: 8-9).
Exposes and reveals sin (Ephesians 5: 11,13).
Reveals that we are His people (1 Peter 2: 9).
Assures us that Jesus is God (2 Corinthians 4: 6).
Keeps us out of dark living (John 12: 46).
Guides the spiritually blind (Romans 2: 19).
Keeps us alert in our tasks for Him (1 Thessalonians 5: 5-6).
Promotes Christian fellowship (1 John 1: 7).

You have made His light your light by asking Him to come into your life. Expand its power by letting it shine out in all the ways mentioned here. You have become the light of the world. Don’t hide it under a basket or put a blanket or a lampshade on it (Matthew 5: 14-15).

Choose one of these ways above and pray that you grow brighter in that area.

What might prevent you from letting that Light shine as you move forward with Him?

Father of Light, illuminate my heart and my mind to hear what You are saying to me through Your Word. Create a bright life filled with Your light. Amen.
